Soi Yaksa Trek – Bhutan’s Hidden Gem in the Himalayas

In the heart of the thunder dragon’s realm, a path unfolds, known by many names whispered on the wind—Jumolhari Loop, the Soi Yaksa Trek, a sacred sister to its longer kin. It is a call to the soul that yearns for the divine presence of Mount Jumolhari, the celestial bride, and her guardian, the formidable Jichu Drake, without the long, arduous traverse to Lingzhi’s heights. This journey is a promise, a more gentle pilgrimage to the feet of gods. Yet, do not be deceived by its shorter stride, for the trail still ascends into the thin, crystalline air where the sky touches the earth, and one must walk with reverence, mindful of the mountain’s powerful, breathless embrace.

The true spirit of this trek reveals itself in the return, a conscious retracing from the hallowed ground of Jangothang base camp. Here, the path becomes a meditation, turning you back towards wonders newly seen. You shall climb towards the heavens to greet the turquoise eye of Tshophu Lake, a fallen shard of sky cradled at the world’s high shoulder, its waters a silent mirror to the clouds. From this jewel, the spirit soars higher still, across the windswept crown of Bhonte La pass, a staggering portal close to the sun, where every breath is a prayer and the world unfurls below in a tapestry of emerald valleys and stone-faced giants, before guiding you back to the enduring spirit of Drukgyal Dzong.

As your pilgrimage nears its final cadence, the trail offers one last, magnificent revelation. Upon the threshold of the Thombu La pass, as you stand poised between earth and ether on the journey’s penultimate day, a final benediction is granted. Your gaze is drawn eastward across the border to the distant, ethereal kingdom of Sikkim. There, like a chorus of light, the Kanchenjunga range rises in a sublime wall of incandescent white. It is a vista that stills the heart, a rewarding panorama of snow-draped titans, a final, divine spectacle that imprints itself upon your memory, affirming that this loop is not merely a trek, but a complete and perfect poem written upon the landscape.
